The new Nitrile gasket used in the Refiner oil filter by John Frantz has a durometer of Shore 70.This gasket is the new design. It has four flat sides configured into a 4.61" circle. It seals the seam between the canister and the Refiner filter base. These new and improved gaskets are GRAY in color. Unlike the prior black gaskets of many years, this gasket sits taller in the groove of the filter base which will avoid leakage risk.

Nitrile rubber (NBR), also called nitrile-butadiene rubber, an oil-resistant synthetic rubber produced from a copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene. Trade names include Nipol, Krynac and Europrene. Its main applications are in fuel hoses, gaskets, rollers, and other products in which oil resistance is required.

The International Rubber Hardness Degrees (IRHD) scale has a range of 0 to 100, corresponding to elastic modulus of 0 (0) and infinite (100), respectively. The measurement is made by indenting a rigid ball into the rubber specimen. The Shore A scale is the most prevalent in the United States.

A durometer scale is a type of measurement for rubber material hardness. The rubber durometer chart below gives you an idea of the rubber hardness that you want for your application. Generally, most rubber materials fall under the rubber durometer scale of Shore A. Thus, if you need a rubber or O-ring durometer that feels like a running shoe sole, review our rubber hardness chart below, then pick Shore 70A. A rubber durometer of Shore 70A is the most commonly chosen material hardness for all applications.

  • a. Shore 20A = Rubber Band
  • b. Shore 40A = Pencil Eraser
  • c. Shore 60A = Car Tire Tread
  • d. Shore 70A = Running Shoe Sole
  • e. Shore 80A = Leather Belt
  • f. Shore 100A = Shopping Cart Wheel
